Runway pieces are one of a kind as are all of my work but the extra work I put into them are for trying out new techniques and inspirations make them special. I never repeat the work but I do apply the techniques and concepts to other items that never look the same at all.

Queen of the Silvery Night

I fell in love with a caftan design in Morocco that inspired me to make this runway piece. The caftan ties above the bust and drops through the legs to come up the back and become the sleeves. See the picture on the right. Then you tie on the waistband. Not stopping there, it needed a felted wrap of silver leaves and flowers and a tall hat as well. She became my "Queen of the Silvery Night" from a poem called 'Silver" by Walter De la Mare. Slowly, silently now the moon.........
Flaming Desire

This one took time to develop. I first made the brassiere as a challenge to myself for a Wearable Art Show in Port Moody British Columbia. It was mostly made from wool and my first try at making handpainted itajame (pleated) shibori. I also wired the edges of the flames for stiffening which worked well. I won a prize and so I used the scraps of the shibori pleating for the thong and hat and added the slacks. But I wasn't content with that. The next summer I handdyed the silk for the cape, appliqued the rest of the silk shibori into a flame design and edged it with black cording. It was another year before I added the feather trim. Now she is finished.
Spiral Cape

In 1999 I wanted to make a signature piece from my Nuno Felting work and a Cape seemed ideal. I covered my worktable with garbage bags with the blown up design and began layering the puffs of wool. The design of course was 3 times bigger than my table so I planned to do it in 3 layers and in sections, felting up to a point, leaving a good sized join area and rolling up the felted area so that I could get to the next section, overlapping the joins. This occurred until all 3 ( actually became 5 with the joins) sections were joined and equal in thickness. The Nuno part was done along the way per my design where the garbage bags indicated.
So now I had this 6' x12' piece of lovely felt with designs on it that needed to be "thrown " or fulled as the finishing is called. OK, into the shower we went--several times in fact until the piece was the size and shape I wanted. Then came the finishing embellishments--yarn, beadwork and a closure were added and the Hat was shaped, clothespinned, felted and steamed into shape . She was ready for the millennium. One last bit was done last year when I decided she also needed quilting along the edges. Now I am satisfied.

Sea Nymph

The Ocean inspired this one. I took a scuba diving class with a final at the Coast. I was amazed at the seaweed and the colors that day. I then chanced upon some scrap fabric that reminded me of that day and Sea Nymph began to take shape. I knew I wanted fluttering on the side seams to move with the surge of the surf. And sleeves that are only half but ruffled like the sea plants I saw. The bra came together as if it made itself and the scraps became the fluttering branches of the sea plants attached to a movable headpiece to wave with the ebb and flow of the tide.
